Dear Members and Friends of the Museum,

The Saskatchewan Aviation Museum has now been in business for six years! Our museum has grown from a small local attraction to a vibrant hub for aviation enthusiasts and historians alike. This milestone is a testament to the dedication and passion of our volunteers, members, and visitors who have supported us every step of the way. Thanks to all who have helped us in our mission of education through preserving and promoting aviation history in Saskatchewan. We have big plans underway and look forward to growing forward with you.

Volunteer of the month: Matt Cinnamon has been a volunteer with our museum for almost four years now and has been incredibly helpful in numerous ways. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated individual with us. As a Tiger Moth pilot, Matt brings a unique and exciting element to our team, and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing him fly as we commence our season.

Matt’s contributions go beyond piloting. He is actively involved in youth leadership at the museum through his involvement with the Saskatchewan Air Cadet League, where he provides classes designed to introduce young people to the thrilling world of aviation. Additionally, Matt recently served as a lecturer at our highly successful “Rust Off” Pilot Refresher Course.

Thank you, Matt, for sharing your care and experience with us! Your dedication and passion are truly inspiring. See picture of Matt below.

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the RCAF.  If you have been keeping up with our newsletters you already know that 2024 is a very special year for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). This year marks the 100th anniversary of the RCAF, a milestone that highlights a century of excellence and teamwork in aviation and service to Canada.
One of the RCAF’s most significant contributions to the Second World War was the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), a massive training program that played a crucial role in preparing Allied aircrew. At our museum, we proudly promote this important chapter of history, with a focus on the iconic yellow-winged trainers used during the BCATP.

This month we are dedicating our spotlight to the Fairchild Cornell, an aircraft integral to the BCATP. The Fairchild Cornell served as a primary trainer for thousands of pilots, helping to build the formidable air force that contributed to the Allied victory. Join us as we share some details, and stories, about the Fairchild Cornell and its pivotal role in the BCATP.  SAM’s 1942 Cornell, is pictured below.

The Fairchild Cornell: A legendary Trainer of WWII. Step into the history of the Fairchild Cornell, also known as the PT-26, a true hero of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) during World War II.
In 1942, Fleet Aircraft in Ontario began producing the Cornell under a deal with Fairchild. By war’s end, 2,853 Cornells had been built, powering the training of thousands of pilots. The Cornell replaced older models like the Fleet Finch and Tiger Moth at many Elementary Flying Training Schools (EFTS). It became the backbone of pilot training, offering stability and reliability for novice aviators and it had similar flight characteristics to other larger aircraft they would be soon flying. Our own museum’s Cornell was a primary trainer in the BCATP at RCAF Station Caron in Saskatchewan, playing a crucial role in training future aces.

The Cornell was the starting point for countless aviation careers, helping trainees master takeoffs, landings, and in-flight maneuvers. Its forgiving nature made it the perfect first step for aspiring pilots. With its rugged design, the Cornell stood up to the rigorous demands of flight training. Its fabric-covered steel tube fuselage and wooden wings were built to last.

Thousands of pilots who started in the Cornell went on to achieve greatness in combat missions across the globe, contributing to the Allied victory. The Cornell ensured top-notch, standardized training across Allied nations (not just in the BCATP). It was instrumental in preparing pilots for advanced aircraft and complex combat flying.

Experience the legacy of the Fairchild Cornell at our museum and join us in celebrating 100 years of the RCAF’s incredible contributions to aviation and national defense. Don’t miss this chance to connect with a piece of history that helped shape the outcome of World War II!

Girls Take Flight Event at Mitchinson’s Flight Centre May 11thThe Saskatchewan Aviation Museum recently participated in a thrilling event at Mitchinson’s Flight Centre, aimed at encouraging young women to explore the world of aviation. This free, family-friendly event offered girls aged 8-18 the chance to experience flying firsthand. Various local organizations showcased their aircraft, providing an inspiring atmosphere for all attendees.

Shelley Jensen, a Commercial Pilot and member of the Museum’s Board of Directors, played a role in the event by taking young women on flights in a Cessna 172. Additionally, the museum displayed their classic Tiger Moth and Chipmunk aircraft, adding a touch of historical aviation charm.

Thanks to the generous contributions from Ghost Transportation, Turner Transport, NRT, and Central Repair, the museum was able to offer hamburger meals to everyone who attended, making the event not only educational and inspiring and even more enjoyable for all. Special thanks to our tireless barbecue chefs Wayne Osterhold, Jim Maloney, Carol Maloney, and her friend Peggy Jodrey.
